Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits

The DRV11873EVM allows the user to evaluate Texas Instruments’ DRV11873 Shielded Gate Driver device or to demonstrate its capabilities. The DRV11873EVM propulsion system contains two boards. The power board contains the DRV11873, power capacitors, and adjustable resistors for current monitoring. The controller board has a communication interface for a graphical user interface used during the setup and control of the motor drive. The graphical user interface includes a library of commands enabling the controller board to connect to DRV11873 via a serial communication interface. Examples of commands include setting the H-bridge configuration, setting the direction of the motor, setting the speed of the motor, setting the current limit, etc.

The DRV11873 has two half bridges of drivers. Each bridge has two outputs: STBY (standby) and IN (input). The STBY output enables the user to put the driver in a nullified state which means no current in the coil. Its impedance value is equal to infinity. The IN output is responsible for activating the gate and then the current inside the coil.

In addition, the DRV11873 has two mechanisms for over-current protection. The first is Over Temperature Protection (OTP), and the second is Over Current Protection (OCP). The OTP mechanism allows the user to prevent damage to the system due to an excessive amount of current passing through the board. The OCP mechanism allows the user to limit the amount of current passing through the board. The user can set the current limits with the two adjustable resistors on the back side of the power board.
