The DRV8860PW is a dual power-stage motor driver IC specifically designed to drive low-voltage stepper motors. This device can provide up to 1.2A peak output current and up to 2A continuous output current when powered from a 5V to 20V DC supply. Because of its ease of use, low cost and high power output, the DRV8860PW is well-suited for a wide range of motor control applications.

The DRV8860PW is based on two power MOSFET half-bridge stages. Each stage is capable of driving any of the four input signals which are labeled STEP, DIR, MODE and SLEEP. These signals are used to control the operation of the motor and the power stages. The power output stages are connected to the motor through two programmable gain stages that allow the user to fine-tune the control of the motor.

The DRV8860PW also integrates several protection features that prevent the device from being damaged by higher voltages or currents. These include an over-current protection circuit that monitors the current in each power stage and an over-voltage protection circuit that monitors the voltage across the power stage nodes. The DRV8860PW also features a low-power sleep mode that reduces the power consumption of the device when the motor is not in use.

In order to make the most of the performance offered by the DRV8860PW, it is important to have a proper understanding of the various operating modes and the proper sequence of signals that need to be applied in order to control the motor. The most common mode of operation is the full-step mode, where the STEP and DIR signals are used to control the current flow through the power stages in such a way that the motor will move in a full-step mode. In this mode, the STEP signal must first be set to logic high, then the DIR signal must be set to logic low, and then the STEP signal is set back to logic low. This sequence will cause the motor to move one full-step forward.

Other operating modes are also available including the half-step mode, the micro-step mode, the lock-step mode and the wave-step mode. In the half-step mode, the STEP signal is used to control the motor in such a way that it moves one full-step followed by half-step forward or backward. The micro-step mode is used for very fine control of the motor, allowing the motor to move a very small step in either direction. The lock-step mode is used to synchronize the movement of two motors while the wave-step mode allows the motor to move a full-step followed by a half-step, allowing the motor to move in a wave-like motion.

The DRV8860PW is an ideal solution for low-voltage stepper motor control applications due to its low cost, robust protection features and ease of use. With the various operating modes available, the DRV8860PW can be used in a wide range of motor control applications.
