In clock/timing applications, one of the most popular tools used is a delay line. The DS1004Z-4+ is a recognized, industry standard, four-channel digital delay line intended for use in clock/timing applications in both general and precision applications. Using the DS1004Z-4+, the system designer is enabled to eliminate the need of over six discrete components (Cmos, Bicmos, & Gates) by providing on-chip delays that are both programmable and adjustable.
The primary benefit of the DS1004Z-4+ is its ability to provide precise delays without the requirement of external components. Additionally, fine-tuning of the delay is possible using the trim potentiometers. The amplifiers are adjustable over a wide range of delays and the delays are spread evenly across the four channels.
The output-to-output timing response of the DS1004Z-4+ is highly repeatable with a maximum tolerance of 0.5 ns. Additionally, the delay variation between channels is minimized to 0.1 ns. This feature is suitable in applications whereby precise, consistent, and repeatable delays are required.
The DS1004Z-4+ has a typical slew rate of 10V/μs and a typical input impedance of 12K Ω. The device has four power supply options window with Vin +5 V to ±2.5V, making the device workable with many range of power supply.Additionally, the device is fully operational at temperatures of -40ºC to +85ºC, making it an ideal candidate for use in industrial, automotive, and high-reliability applications such as Avionics and Data- Communications.
In terms of operating modes, the DS1004Z-4+ can be operated in single-shot (with reset, switching mode, and inhibit) or in stepped mode. In stepped mode, it can be operated in linear, exponential or conical delay transition. In single-shot mode, the output pulses are triggered by an input signal applied to any of the four inputs. The outputs respond with an input signal delay which is dependent on the RC (Resistor-Capacitor) circuits connected to the amplifier/sampler.
The total delay from one output to the next is determined by the RC values, and the trim pots control the relative delays between channels. The outputs are amplitude and rise time adjustable, providing a means to optimize the pulse transition for all applications. In stepped mode, the delay is modified without any RC components.
Overall, the DS1004Z-4+, a state-of-the-art, digital delay line, is an excellent choice for clock/timing applications as it eliminates the need for external components and provides adjustable and programmable delays.
