The DS1386-8-120 Clock is a Low power, Real-Time Clock (RTC) microchip that is highly accurate and reliable due to its 8 pF ceramic resonator frequency reference that is temperature compensated over the entire temperature range -40oC to +85oC with the addition of a crystal-based oscillator. It is designed to give real time clock timing accuracy of ±2 minutes per month over the -40oC to +85oC temperature range.

The DS1386-8-120 Clock is commonly used as a time-of-day reference in a wide variety of embedded systems, such as copiers, mobile phones, security systems, electronic billing systems, and gateways. The clock can operate in circuit temperatures from -40oC to +85oC, making it an ideal choice for outdoor and industrial applications.

The DS1386-8-120 is an 8-pin DIP device that operates from 2.4V to 5.5V. It employs a 12 bits-per-second low frequency (LF) clock with selectable frequencies such as 32.768KHz, 4.096KHz, 1.024KHz, and 32KHz. These selectable frequencies can be used in stand-alone or bus-driven systems to measure time and date with an accuracy at 0.036%, allowing for low-power operation.

The DS1386-8-120 Clock works based the crystal oscillator, a quartz crystal that vibrates at a very precise frequency with a very low frequency tolerance, once current is supplied to the crystal. The crystal then drives the internal microcontroller, which keeps track of time and date by comparing the crystal frequencies to the microcontroller’s generated clock signals. When a user sets the alarm, or requests the internal microcontroller to report the time and/or date, the microcontroller communicates the crystal oscillator’s frequency and compares it to the current base frequency in order to report the time and/or date.

Since the crystal is temperature compensated, the microcontroller is able to factor in the temperature, which may otherwise cause error in the accuracy of the time and/or date reported by the clock. The temperature compensation occurs when the microcontroller reads the crystal’s frequency through the system’s temperature sensor, which helps compensate for any temperature-induced frequency shift.

The programmable features also allow users to customize the clock to their particular applications. For example, the programmable oscillator tolerance allows users to select the tolerance of the crystal oscillator, so that the clock can be tuned to compensate for any environmental factors that may affect its accuracy.The power saving feature gives users the ability to reduce the current draw from the crystal during periods of inactive operation, resulting in lower power consumption. The greatly extended battery life and power savings are further augmented by the optional Backup system.
