Real-time clocks are essential components of many computational systems, not only from the standpoint of providing precision timing references, but also from a system stability standpoint. The DS14287 is a real-time clock module designed for precision timing applications requiring accurate and reliable timing data in a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and consumer applications.
The DS14287 is designed to provide an ever-increasing count of seconds since January 1, 2000. The device utilizes a high-precision Real-Time Clock with a long-term stability of ±2ppm max, and a minimum of ±0.5ppm over the temperature range of 0° to 70°C. It can be used to measure elapsed time intervals, accurately calculate dates and times, log time and temperature data, and provide a time-of-day (TOD) reference.
The device features a 3V lithium battery backup which ensures that the time and calendar information will not be lost if the main power source is ever lost or interrupted. An on-chip antenna ensures that wireless programming is not necessary, though the module can be programmed through either PC software or an external programmer. The unit is available in both surface mount and through-hole varieties.
The module itself is quite simple. It consists of an internal Real-Time Clock integrated circuit (RTC), power supply, and a battery backup. The internal circuitry of the device is designed for quick and accurate reading of dates and times. It has a quartz crystal oscillator that is used to provide a reference frequency for the real-time clock circuitry. An on-board Temperature Sensor is used to correct the oscillator module’s operation over temperature. A low-power low-noise switching power supply is also internal to the device.
Additionally, the device employs a three-volt lithium battery backup which helps maintain the timekeeping data in the case of loss of power or other interruptions. This battery is also used to power the device in the event of a power failure or other event that causes the main power source to be unavailable or uncertain. Finally, the DS14287 includes an LCD display which allows the time and date stored in the RTC to be read easily.
