Real Time Clocks - DS1501YN application field and working principle
Real-time clocks (RTC) are always a critical part of any embedded system design, allowing the system to keep track of time and events even if power is removed or the processor core fails. DS1501YN is a real-time clock with several integrated functions and superior data integrity, setting itself apart from many competing general-purpose types by offering greater accuracy, flexibility and ease of use.The DS1501YN is a CMOS real-time clock with 8KB of nonvolatile SRAM, operating at an electronic frequency of 32.768kHz. It uses an I2C/two-wire serial interface along with a 32-bit timer to set and control date, time and alarm settings. The device is available in two packages: SO and TSSOP8, and can operate over a temperature range of 0 to 70˚C. The DS1501YN supports various backup sources for maintaining clock settings when power is disconnected and includes an on-chip RC oscillator for reducing power consumption. RTCs provide the link between the system, time and events. In many applications, from automotive to industrial, these time-keeping functions provide the backbone for the system. Features such as alarms and event control are used to manage events or activities at specific times and keep track of system time. The DS1501YN creates an efficient and accurate timekeeping system for multiple applications.The first function of the DS1501YN is an 8KB nonvolatile SRAM. This SRAM is used to store and quickly access data, eliminating the need for an external SRAM device. Storing the data in SRAM allows for rapid access when the device is reset or the system power is removed.The second key feature of the DS1501YN is its 32-bit timer. This timer controls the date, time and alarm settings of the device, allowing it to accurately track time, and keeps an accurate record of events and activities. The timer can be programmed to allow the device to wake up at predefined intervals in order to perform various tasks or activities.The third function of the DS1501YN is its on-chip RC oscillator. This oscillator reduces power consumption, but still allows the device to maintain accuracy over temperature changes. It does this by using the ratio of capacitors to resistors to create and maintain an oscillation pattern. The oscillator has a frequency resolution of 0.1ppm and is accurate to within 5ppm at temperatures of 0 - 70˚C.The DS1501YN also supports backup sources for maintaining clock time when power is disconnected, allowing it to remain accurate even when power is removed for extended periods of time. The device supports three backup sources: Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Supercapacitor, and battery. Each source provides different benefits and features, but all offer superior data integrity and accuracy, even when disconnected from power. Lastly, the DS1501YN is an extremely energy efficient device, with an active current of less than 1µA. This makes it ideal for low-power applications. It also integrates RTC signal outputs, interrupt and voltage detect functions, making it a complete solution for time-keeping and RTC control.The DS1501YN is an extremely versatile and rugged real-time clock, designed to meet the needs of multiple application types. Its 8KB of nonvolatile SRAM and 32-bit timer allow it to accurately keep track of time and activities, while its on-chip RC oscillator and backup sources provide superior data integrity.
