The DS1557WP-120IND+ is a high-performance low-power real-time clock (RTC) prodcut that provides an extremely accurate time reference over a wide temperature range. It integrates all of the necessary components to form an accurate, temperature compensated, oscillator-based clock and a battery-backuped SRAM. This RTC product has widespread applicability in many embedded system designs requiring a time base that meets or exceeds the current industry-standard requirements.
The DS1557WP-120IND+ is designed around a standard, low phase noise, high-performance quartz crystal oscillator. This oscillator is connected to two inverting stages that provide additional gain and a higher-quality clock. The inverting stages, combined with the adjustable current controlled oscillator (ACO) circuit, ensure that oscillator frequency and noise are maintained within a very narrow tolerance window throughout wide temperature swings as wide as -40oC to +85oC. As an added feature, the ACO can also be used to compensate for crystal aging across temperature.
The oscillator signal is then fed directly into the input of the phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit. The post-divider output stage of the PLL circuit provides a 1 Hz square wave for long-term accuracy. The oscillator signal, however, is further divided down to a frequency of 4 kHz by the PLL circuit\'s frequency divider. The 4 kHz signal is connected as the input to the programmable timer circuit and can be configured to generate interrupt signals that can be used in applications such as alarm or event-time generation.
The DS1557WP-120IND+ also integrates a battery back-uped SRAM. This SRAM is used to store settings and other time-dependent data, including the current time and interrupt timings. The SRAM data is updated with each write cycle by the processor, which is performed using a write-cycle monitor so that accidental programming operations do not corrupt the SRAM memory. The SRAM data is also backed up by a lithium battery, which ensures that the SRAM data remains available even if the main power supply is removed.
The DS1557WP-120IND+ product is used in a wide range of applications, including precision timing, application-level synchronization, sensor data collection, data logging, remote monitoring, and event-driven timing.
