Introduction

DS1811-5+ (\'DS1811\') is a dedicated integrated circuit (IC) intended for use as a power monitor, supervisor and switch controller for medium, and high power applications. The device combines an over-voltage protected load switch, undervoltage and over-voltage monitoring and two independent open-drain outputs with a dedicated power fail output. Working Principle

The DS1811 is a dedicated IC intended for use as a power fail, supervisor, and switch controller for medium and high-power applications. It only requires three external components for its operation: a resistor and two capacitors. When power is applied to the device, the internal circuits monitor the supply voltage (Vcc). This voltage must be greater than the Over Voltage trip level set by the resistor/capacitor combination. If the input voltage drops below the trip level, the device switches off the load by asserting the Open Drain output. The DS1811 monitors both under voltage and over voltage conditions with three independent comparators. An under voltage trip for Vcc is set by the resistor/capacitor combination, which is used to limit the amount of power that is being drawn by the load. If the voltage drops below the trip point, the DS1811 will begin to switch off the load. The under voltage trip point can also be adjusted with an external resistor. An over voltage trip prevents any over voltage conditions from being applied to the load. The over voltage trip is monitored by the open drain output. When the over voltage trip point is reached, the open drain output will be asserted and the load will be disconnected until the input voltage drops back down to a safe level. The DS1811 incorporates a number of other features not found in other Supervisors, including soft switching, time-out detection, and power fail detection. The soft switching feature allows the load voltage to be safely ramped up or down at a set rate in order to prevent any sudden spikes from occurring when the output is connected/disconnected. The time-out detection feature allows for an adjustable time-out delay before the load is disconnected from the input source. This feature prevents short run-away conditions from occurring if the power supply fails. Finally, the power fail detect feature monitors for voltage irregularities which could indicate an impending power failure. If a power failure is imminent, the power fail detect feature will ascertain this and begin to ramp down the load voltage prior to the power failure.
