PMIC - Supervisors: DS1834A Application Field and Working Principle

Peer Analog\'s DS1834A is one of the latest and most advanced PMIC (Power management IC) - supervisors designed to address the ever-increasing power consumption needs of modern electronics. This powerful device combines overvoltage, reset and monitoring functions in a small surface-mount package that requires circuit board space reduction, making it an ideal choice for applications in industrial, automotive, telecom/data communication and consumer markets.

Application Field

The functional of the DS1834A includes over-voltage protection (OVP) and reset, watchdog timer and supply monitoring. These features provide fault protection and fast recovery from severe faults without the need for external components. The device also features a low-power consumption and low-standby current profile, making it suitable for use in low-power and battery-powered applications. The device offers two selectable over-voltage levels, +14.6V and +15.9V, and it can be adjusted to provide a wide OVP threshold range to protect hardware components and increase reliability. Furthermore, an adjustable reset delay times provides flexibility in recovering from a fault. The DS1834A is designed to monitor and protect systems that use multiple supply voltages and/or multiple boards with different power sources. The device has two under-voltage monitors (UVM) that ensure proper power sourcing from the main supply or from a battery, and four supply monitors that detect ESD and over-voltage (OV) conditions. Furthermore, the device supports different supply sequencing needs with its adjustable reset generation. This ensures the proper sequencing of voltage rails and allows for up to 14 power supply rails to be monitored. Lastly, the DS1834A has an over-temperature protection feature that will trip an alarm if the temperature of the device or the host system exceeds the maximum operating limit.

Working Principle

The DS1834A employs a “Digital Power Management” system in order to provide fault protection and fast machine recovery. It incorporates a series of switching regulators that are controlled by a programmable logic controller. When a fault is detected, the device will activate the over-voltage and/or under-voltage monitoring functions, which will trip an alarm if the input voltage exceeds the permitted range. The device will then generate a reset signal to the host system to initiate a safe shutdown procedure. In order to enable the reset signal, the DS1834A will activate the reset generator which will generate a series of reset pulses that can be used to reset the host system. After the reset signal is initiated, the device will then monitor the supply voltage and the system temperature in order to detect any further faults. If an over-temperature fault is detected, the reset generator is then disabled to prevent the reset signal from being re-triggered. Lastly, the device will set an output signal to indicate the power conditions to its host system.
