PMIC (Power Management ICs) are essential for the efficient use, delivery, and storage of electrical energy. Different types of PMICs are used to handle different scenarios; one application area that they are used in is Supervisors. Supervisors handle fault and overload protection, sequencing and sequencing control, system reset and power-on reset, and level detection and logic functions. One type of supervisor IC is the DS1834AU+ Supervisory Circuit. This IC is an ultra-low power CMOS supervisor employing a precision voltage detector and reset function, and is suitable for use in personal computer products, desktop, portable and laptop systems, instrumentation, communications systems and embedded microcomputer applications.

This voltage detector returns to its quiescent state within 60 voltage-monitoring cycles once the VDD supply has stabilized. The output reset is driven low until VDD has exceeded VTH, and then its re-initialized to a high state. The reset remains active while the detect voltage is above the programmed reset threshold, with a guaranteed reset active (VOUT = ‘0’V) warning time of tWARN minimum = 10 ms.
The DS1834AU+ is designed to work automatically in response to programmable conditions and reset levels, with an open-drain, active-low reset output. This active-low output provides power-on reset (POR) propagation delays in the form of a reset S-R (Set-Reset) latch. This is users can advise initial states of the system and control their reset sequence. Furthermore, the reset output is asserted low under low-voltage conditions and can be enabled and disabled.
The DS1834AU+ is designed for applications where minimum system power consumption and high reliability are desired, such as PC power-on sequencing, system health monitoring and over-temperature shutdown. Some of the common applications of the DS1834AU+ include temperature monitoring and fan/heat-sink control in notebook PCs and having watchdog protection against lockouts due to software stalls. Its POR circuit is qualified to keep system voltages stable during power-on and power-off sequences for up to 8.0 mS.
