Diodes are a type of component composed of two terminals. The main function of diodes is to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). That is, the diode device can be used to allow current to flow in only one direction. A wide range of specific applications involve rectifier diodes. As a type of rectifiers, single diodes bridge the gap between AC and DC and change the current’s direction of flow. This article will focus on the DST5200 single rectifier diode, its application field and working principle. The DST5200 is a surface mount (SMT) rectifier diode. The diode’s package is a small molded SOD112 component that is suitable for high density circuit boards. With a reverse voltage rating of 500V and a forward voltage of 1.25V at a peak reverse current of 100mA, the DST5200 is used for general-purpose rectifier applications. It is widely used for rectifying AC in power supplies, motor drives, and general power converters. The principles behind the function of diodes involve pn junctions. The pn-junction or junction diode can alternatively be called a pn-diode. It is a vital component in electronics and consists of two of the three basic elements used in semiconductor electronics: n-type semiconductor and p-type semiconductor. One main characteristic of a pn junction is that when biased in the right direction with an external voltage source, a current consisting of majority carriers, flows across the junction. When voltage is applied to the DST5200 diode, the applied voltage will forward bias the diode. That is, the diode will permit current to flow towards the anode via the pn junction. At the pn junction, majority carriers, electrons in the n-type material and holes from the p-type material are combined, or recombined. This recombination of minority carriers and majority carriers across the junction produces current flowing through the external circuit. The forward junction voltage drop, also referred to as the forward voltage, is the voltage that is dropped across the diode due to its function. This results in a loss of energy as heat. Diodes are also related to rectification, which is the process of converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This process is necessary for electronic devices to run in electronic circuits because the polarities of switches, relays, voltage amplifiers, and other electronic components need to be fixed. In the case of reverse biasing the DST5200, the junction is reverse biased, which means that the bias voltage is applied in the opposite direction to the flow of majority carriers. In other words, the majority carriers will try to move away from the pn junction instead of towards it. For any diode, the junction reverse bias voltage must exceed the diode’s reverse breakdown voltage before the diode starts to conduct in the reverse direction or produce leakage current. In summary, the DST5200 single rectifier diode is a surface mount component designed for general purpose rectification applications. It converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and is used for applications such as power supplies, motor drives, and general power converters.
