Proximity sensors are a type of engineering equipment used to detect proximity to an object. Though they have various different forms, usually, they work on the basis of the change of distances measured either by mechanical antenna or ultrasonic waves. The E2FM-X5C1 5M Inductive Proximity Sensor from OMRON Corporation, is a cylindrical extended range conduction-type sensor with a sensing range of 5m. The two fields interact with each other; when the object comes within certain distances from the sensor, a re-radiation current is generated which is then observed in the primary coil. Further, a switching action then follows, switching the output state of the device from 0V to the supply voltage. The distance at which the switching action takes place is known as the switching distance and is adjustable with the help of an external resistor.

The detection range of the E2FM-X5C1 5M Inductive Proximity Sensor is adjustable, depending upon the size and the calibration of the external resistor. Its response time is very short, with no contact or deformation to the target object. Additionally, it is not affected by the water, dust or oil present in the surrounding environment.
