Working Principle

The E3MC-X41 color sensor functions on the basis of triangulation reflection measurement, which is different from the light source・optical filter system used by conventional color sensors. Because it does not use a light source, it is highly reliable and does not require periodic light source replacement or complicated setting.

When using a triangulation reflection, a light is emitted from the optical axis of the camera by a line-shaped LED light, and a signal that is reflected by the object under measurement is received by a signal processor. The signal is then outputted as electrical signal. The principle of triangulation reflection measurement is the same as when the speaker emits sound and the direction of the sound source is determined by the time lag of the sound reflected on an object.

The E3MC-X41 color sensor measures the RGB color of objects and supports variety of colors. The difference between the triangulation method and the optical filter system used in the past is that triangulation is less influenced by the illumination environment, and since the sensor is not used by a light source, it is not necessary to consider alternate light source replacement.

In addition, colour measurements can be done with high resolution. The wavelength range is 400nm to 700nm and the color measurement accuracy is 0.2 delta E or less (in terms of color difference expression).
