The EA4525YH evaluation board is a DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS, a type of electronic circuit used to convert one form of power to another. The board is designed to evaluate and demonstrate the performance of the FAN53941 synchronous boost controller and its operation within a typical SMPS application. The board is suitable for both conventional transformer-based upon as well as transformer-less switch-mode power supplies.

The evaluation board includes a FAN5361 synchronous boost controller, an inductor, a heatsink, a free-wheeling diode, capacitor banks, a housing, a trim option, a thermal shut off, a power switch, and an auxiliary switch. These components make the board able to convert a wide range of input voltage, efficiencies up to 93.5%, and output voltages up to 70V while delivering up to 8W of power.

In general, SMPS are based on the principle of conversion of DC power into AC power of varying frequencies or vice-versa. The conversion occurs through the use of an inductor and a capacitor along with the switches and power transmission components like transformers and diodes. The main steps followed in an SMPS circuit are rectifier, filter, DC-DC conversion, and voltage regulating/control. The EA4525YH evaluation board includes these steps.

The FAN5361 synchronous boost controller is the heart of the board. It is a high-voltage capable boost converter that features auto restart under fault conditions, an adjustable switching frequency, and incorporates a delay start circuit. During the rectifier stage, the AC input voltage is converted to a DC voltage. The output of the rectifier is then provided to the filter to reduce noise. In the DC-DC conversion stage, the filter output is converted to the required output voltage and current.

The EA4525YH board includes two stages of voltage regulation/control, which is responsible for maintaining the output voltage within the specified tolerance throughout the input voltage and load variations. The primary regulation stage is based on the voltage feedback reference while the secondary stage provides an additional protection by monitoring the output voltage. In case of an overvoltage or undervoltage protection, the board is designed to shut down and restart the power switch automatically.
