EA8938 is a popular equipment used in the Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS application field for current and voltage measurement and power testing. The design of EA8938 is based on a four quadrant, shunt-mode architecture to provide good accuracy and resolution in both current and voltage measurements under these dynamic conditions. The device is rated for up to 25A and a voltage of 30V, flexible enough for any project that requires current and voltage monitoring.
The design of EA8938 allows for low-side and/or high-side current monitoring. With the device’s shunt-mode architecture, differential measurements are easily made between two adjacent cells or leads. The power monitor also provides on-chip averaging window (sample count) and temperature compensation functions. The sequence of these window and compensation functions allow the user to minimize variations in the measurement process by delivering accurate and reliable readings.
In terms of working principle, the EA8938 is based on the four-quadrant architecture, with current and voltage measurements taken separately with each quadrant. The first quadrant measures the voltage at the load point, as well as the current flowing through it. The other three quadrants measure the current passing through the main supply, load, and ground lines respectively. As the current flows through the measurement quadrants, the measured values are then averaged over a set window to take into account any fluctuations in the readings.
Once the values for current and voltage have been taken, they are then used to determine the power being supplied to the load. This power value is then calculated over a span of time which is set by the user. The end result of this process is a comprehensive measurement of the power that is being supplied to the load, allowing for a more precise control of power supply design and operation.
In additon, the EA8938 allows for external power source selection and/or indication notifications when the supply gets close to its high or low threshholds. With this feature, the user can set the device to switch between different power sources when the power demands warrant a change – i.e. when the load exceeds the power capacity provided by the input supply. This same feature allows for more accurate control of the power levels supplied to the load.
Additionally, the EA8938 has a built-in temperature compensation feature that can be enabled to reduce variations in the readings taken over time. This feature compensates for any temperature variations due to the environment where the device is being used – ensuring that the readings obtained are precise and consistent across multiple conditions.
Overall, the EA8938 is a highly cost effective choice for any Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS application that requires precise current and voltage measurement capabilities. The device is capable of providing highly accurate readings under a variety of dynamic conditions, making it ideal for precise control of power supply design and operation. The built-in features such as the temperature compensator, window averaging, and external power sourcing selection makes the EA8938 a very versatile tool for engineers and researchers.
