EKI-LM4F232 is an embedded family of evaluation boards from Embest which provide a powerful and low-cost solution for developing and evaluating applications based on LM4F232H5QD ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller from Texas Instruments. This evaluation board is mainly used to communicate with various devices like sensors, motors, LCDs etc. It also supports several built-in peripherals like Ethernet, CAN, UART, I²C (I2C), SPI and GPIO.
The ARM Cortex-M4F consists of a set of 32-bit RISC processor cores and includes Memory Protection Unit (MPU) which is used to protect memory from being accessed by a peripheral device or another application on the MCU. The board also provides an integrated debugger used for debugging and programming applications. It provides power supply of 5V/3.3V which can be regulated via an external power supply.
The primary purpose of the EKI-LM4F232 evaluation board is to develop applications with the help of a wide range of peripherals. This evaluation board features an on-board debugger (I-jet) which provides debug capabilities such as breakpoint debugging, variable tracking, hardware trace and software trace support. This onboard debugger supports both online and offline debugging with support for source-level debugging using integrated Debug Unit (IDU). This debug unit makes it easy for developers to debug their code and quickly identify errors.
The EKI-LM4F232 evaluation board also offers a support for FreeRTOS. FreeRTOS is an open source real-time operating system which provides a wide range of services for applications and is also extensible and customizable. This board supports two modes of programming which includes embedded software development with Code Composer Studio (CCS) and bare metal programming using the LM4F232 Launchpad from Texas Instruments.
The EKI-LM4F232 evaluation board also supports Ethernet, CAN, UART, I²C (I2C), SPI and GPIO. Ethernet is used to connect devices over a local network and provides a standardized way to communicate with each other. CAN is a serial communication protocol used for connecting multiple devices for data exchange. UART is a serial communication protocol used for sending and receiving data. I²C (I2C) is used for communicating between multiple electronic devices, while SPI is commonly used to communicate with sensors, external memory, and displays. The GPIO feature allows devices to be controlled and monitored using the MCU GPIO pins.
The EKI-LM4F232 evaluation board also has on-board debugging tools which give the developers support for debugging and programming. The tools include functionality such as setting and clearing breakpoints, inspecting variables and memory, setting up watch windows, modifying register values and single stepping through code. The on-board debugging tools also have support for debugging of applications running on the FreeRTOS. They provide debugging information about the application such as variables, tasks, heap, stack, interrupts and recurrent calls to functions.
The EKI-LM4F232 evaluation board also features an on-board programming interface which supports programming of the application on the MCU. The programming interface provides support for programming in different languages such as C and Assembly. It provides a simple means of programming the application onto the MCU with the help of the included software development suite.
In conclusion, the EKI-LM4F232 is a powerful, low-cost solution for developing and evaluating applications based on the LM4F232H5QD ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller from Texas Instruments. This evaluation board provides a wide range of built-in peripherals such as Ethernet, CAN, UART, I²C (I2C), SPI and GPIO for device connectivity and access. It also supports debugging tools and programming interfaces for developing and programming applications for the MCU. FreeRTOS support is also included to facilitate application development. This evaluation board is a great choice for embedded application development
