Optoisolators are devices that use light to isolate electrical signals between two different circuits. The Vishay Semiconductor EL212-V is an example of such a device and is part of the company\'s optocoupler family. It is a single channel, phototransistor output optocoupler. This particular device has many applications, including being used to provide electrical isolation by blocking transients and electro-magnetic interference (EMI). The operation of the EL212-V optoisolator is based on the working principle of photovoltaic output. When light from an external source is directed onto the phototransistor, it creates a tiny fraction of electrical current. This electrical current is then passed through the base of the phototransistor. As the electric current passes through the base, it then causes the transistor to switch on and the logic control signal is passed to the second circuit, thus providing the isolation between the two systems.

The EL212-V is a reliable device that is capable of providing both input and output electrical isolation. It has a minimum isolation voltage up to 5000Vrms at a minimum isolation resistance of 10^14.
