Optoisolators, as one of the passive components, are used to separate two circuits, usually a lowvoltage circuit and a high-voltage circuit. The most well-known optoisolator is the EL213 (TA), with output transistor and photovoltaic cell components. Here we will discuss its application field and working principle.

Application Field

EL213 (TA) are widely used in various consumer electronics, industrial and automotive control systems, mainly in the following cases:

  • To protect vulnerable control units from overvoltage generated by external loads.
  • To turn an electrical signal into a light signal for communication between remote places.
  • To generate a pulse from a photoelectric thyrister (PTC) for its compatibility to medium frequency high-voltage and high-current circuits.
  • To convert mechanical signals into electrical signals when used with light dependent resistors (LDRs).

Working Principle

In brief, EL213 (TA)\'s working principle is to convert electrical signals to light signals with the help of a photocell, thus eliminating the contact and electrical leakage between the input and output circuits. Specifically, this optoisolator is composed of an infrared LED (Light Emitting Diode) and a PTC (Photoelectric Thyrister). When the voltage is applied to the control unit and the working threshold is reached, the LED will be triggered and emits infrared light. The light will be received by the PTC and is further transformed into a pulse output. Thus, each time the working threshold is reached, the LED will be triggered and the output pulse will be generated.

In addition, EL213 (TA) also has some other features. It is able to guarantee accurate OFF-state electrical isolation of 100kHz, built-in noise suppression, solid-state reliability, and low power consumption. These features make EL213 (TA) perfectly suitable for low-voltage and low-current applications.
