Optoisolators are integral devices intended for isolating the input circuits from the output ones. Of this family, the EL814M(A) is a type of transistor, photovoltaic output type of optoisolator, functioning by transferring electronic currents from one form to the other.
The EL814M(A) consists of an input side which is typically a light emitting diode (LED). At the other end a photovoltaic switch is present, which functions to detect the light emitted by the LED and initiate the output signal. This photovoltaic switch is often a single diode such as a Schmitt trigger, flip-flop, or other type of diode.
Primarily, the EL814M(A) is used in applications where it is necessary to isolate the input and output. In general, the optoisolator is placed between the input and output so that, irrespective of the type of the input circuit and the output circuit, they remain isolated in function and operation. This is of great benefit if one of the circuits operates at a higher voltage and requires protection from the other one.
When the input circuit is activated by means of electrical current, the EL814M(A) is triggered, emitting a light signal. This is detected by the photovoltaic switch, whereupon the switch is actuated. As a result, the output is initiated and an electrical current is sent in order to activate the desired operation. It is important to note that this current must remain separate from the input one. Otherwise, the components located in the input section would be affected.
