Optoisolators – Transistor, Photovoltaic Output is a technology used to isolate signals electronically by using a light source. The EL816(M)(D)-V is an optoisolator from Fairchild Semiconductor which consists of an infrared emitting diode combined with a phototransistor detector. This device is designed primarily for digital isolation between two circuit sections and is suitable for applications in both commercial and industrial electronics.
The EL816(M)(D)-V incorporates a GaP emitters that provides superior performance and reliability with the robust mechanical and environmental specification of a 6-pin dual-in-line package (DIP). It is designed for data speed up to 25 Mbps, with industry standard high isolation voltage of 5300 Vrms. This device operates with signaling rates up to 10 MHz, with a rise time as fast as 20 ns and turn off times as small as 30 ns.
Application Field
The EL816(M)(D)-V is suitable for digital isolated communication in the industrial and consumer applications. It can be used to replace or isolate analog or digital signals in control systems, as well as in the automotive, energy / power, medical, security and office/home appliances markets.
Examples of specific applications include controlling digital relays, isolating amplifiers, converting digital signals to analog current outputs, and isolating mixed-signal data systems. EL816(M)(D)-V can also be used in applications such as driving small DC motors or modulating voltages and currents, and for signal isolating power supplies.
Working Principle
Optoisolator technology works by using an infrared light source and a photodiode in a package that insulates the output from the input. The EL816(M)(D)-V works with two internal components: an infrared light emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor. When the input signal is turned on, the LED emits invisible infrared light, which impinges onto the phototransistor, activating it. The phototransistor then switches on, thus producing an output signal.
The signal transfer is galvanically isolated between the input and output circuits and only takes place with the LED being switched on. This allows isolating sensitive analog signals without introducing noise contributions or unwanted coupling of DC or power signals between the two circuits. The isolation also prevents high voltage pulses coming from either inputs or outputs to reach the other one.
The EL816(M)(D)-V can be used with various optocouplers and optosensors for high speed communication applications, power switching, line isolation, pulse, and analog signal conditioning applications. It provides outstanding performance during high frequency signal transmission due to the frequency response of the phototransistor.
