An Optoisolator - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output, also known as EL814S1(TB), is an electrical component used to separate circuits electrically while providing digital or analog signals between the input and output sides. It is widely used in a variety of applications requiring isolation protection, including power system control, industrial automation, medical, telecommunication and consumer, and automotive applications.

The EL814S1(TB) Optoisolator utilizes a light emitting diode (LED) coupled with a voltage and/or current triggered phototransistor output type optoelectronic device. It can transmit signals of up to 15kilovolts and 10mA of current, with response times of less than 1microsecond. This optocoupler is available in an epoxy Dip package, designed for mounting on a printed circuit board.

The EL814S1(TB) imparts complete galvanic isolation between input and output circuits. The optocoupler’s photovoltaic output is triggered by the light emitted from an LED when it is switched on. The current or voltage that it can switch depends on the size of the driven LED. The optoelectronic device in the form of a phototransistor will detect the light emitted from the LED and switch on when it exceeds a certain threshold level.

The working principle of EL814S1(TB) is quite simple and involves three distinct steps:

  • Photogeneration: The LED emits photons of light when it is triggered by a voltage or a current. This triggers the phototransistor.
  • Transduction: The photons are converted by the phototransistor into an electrical signal.
