Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output

The EL816(M)-V is an optically-coupled transistor, photovoltaic output opto isolator designed to isolate low level digital logic signals from the load and the environment. This isolator employs a monolithic semiconductor with a phototransistor driver. It is designed to interface with control ICs such as the Microchip Technology Inc. MT-2X series, CMOS logic, TTL logic, and miscellaneous logic families.

This opto isolator has many applications including protection from voltage or current spikes, isolation of analog circuits from digital, interfacing circuits to high voltage, and isolation of input signals from the output. Its ability to isolate signals affords safety from electrical shock, which is a key factor when designing systems involving 120VAC or more.

The working principle of the EL816(M)-V is based on the isolation of an LED’s light from the phototransistor, creating a system where the electrical input signals can be isolated from the output electrodes. The LED is supplied with a bias current range from 7 mA to 30 mA and the phototransistor collector-emitter current is 0.15 mA to 1 mA. The light emitted by the LED is coupled with the phototransistor, and when the LED is turned on, the phototransistor’s collector-emitter junction turns on, thereby opening the opto isolator circuit, allowing analog current to flow between the input and the output.

The EL816(M)-V has a few key performance features. It is designed for high speed switching at 3V, 5V, and 12V digital levels with minimal propagation delays (<= 270 ns) and maximum collector-emitter turn-on time of 0.6 ms. Furthermore, a low leakage current of 2.3 μA is possible even with a bias current as low as 10 μA, providing low power consumption. The opto isolator has a wide temperature range (-55°C to 125°C) and a high insulation resistance of 1010 ohms.

The EL816(M)-V is used in many communication and control applications. For example, its high speed switching capability is ideal for time division multiplexed (TDM) applications. It can also be used in modems, radio transceivers, motor control, and high voltage electronic systems. The isolation capability of the EL816(M)-V ensures that the input and output signals of a system are properly insulated from each other.
