Optoisolators are devices that isolate sensitive electronics from potentially damaging input signals. This type of isolator, referred to as a Transistor, Photovoltaic Output, makes use of an LED (light emitting diode) in combination with a photovoltaic output transistor to provide galvanic isolation. The EL816 (S1)(A)(TD) is a sample optoisolator from the EL816 series which offers an input-output isolation of 5000 Vrms and data rates up to 25 Mbps.

As the name suggests, an optoisolator relies on the transfer of optical energy from one circuit to the other in order to transfer a signal or induce a response.
