Working Principle

EL816(S1)(D)(TU) optoisolators are a type of transistor, photovoltaic output optoisolator. The input LED of the optocoupler is driven by a voltage input from the circuit to be isolated, while the output of the optocoupler is provided to the circuit to be isolated from the input. When the input voltage is above a prescribed threshold, the LED in the optocoupler turns on, emitting a light beam across the gap between the input and output. This beam is detected by the integrated circuit, which in turn produces an output voltage.

The operation of the optoisolator can be simplified to a pair of light-dependent switches. The input LED is the switch that is used to activate the output transistor, while the output transistor is the switch used to pass the output voltage from the input to the output. By using separate switches that operate independently of each other, the optoisolator is capable of providing electrical isolation between the input and output.
