Optoisolators are useful devices for providing electrical isolation between two circuits, commonly referred to as input and output circuits. This electrical isolation is accomplished by using a physical barrier, such as a light emitting diode (LED) which is optically coupled to a photobransistor, to separate the two circuits and prevent high voltage surges and Electric Fast Transients (EFTs) from damaging or interfering with sensitive device in the output circuit. The EL817(S1)(B)(TB)-V is an optoisolator family belonging to the category of Transistor, Photovoltaic Output.

The EL817(S1)(B)(TB)-V optoisolators are designed to meet the safety requirements of Safety Standard IEC 60747-5-2 where a single Optocoupler in the input circuit is need for sensing. It is ideal for applications like biomedical instruments, computer peripheral interfaces, industrial automation and consumer electronics. They are capable of interfacing various mixed signal or high-powered AC or DC loads to digital logic gate and communication equipment, such as computers, keyboards, modems, FAX machines, pagers, and environmental sensors.

The EL817(S1)(B)(TB)-V optoisolators have a UV-enhanced GaAs infrared LED and a photodarlington detector, which provide superior current transfer ratio (CTR), high common mode transient immunity, and low input-output coupling capacitance of 15pF maximum. The optoisolator is available in packages with 4 pins and 6 pins such as PDIP, SOIC,TO-92, DMPO and SMD packages.

The working principle of EL817(S1)(B)(TB)-V optoisolators is quite simple. It has an LED (also known as emitter) that emits an infrared light when it receives an electrical signal of specific voltage and current. The infrared light is passed through a detection chamber housing the photodarlington detector. The photodarlington detector then generates electrical signals in response to the light and transmits the electrical signals to the output circuit. Thus electrical isolation between the input and output circuits is provided.

The EL817(S1)(B)(TB)-V optoisolators offer many advantages. The main advantage of using the optoisolator is its high electrical isolation between input and output circuits.
