Optoisolators are used when two signals need to remain electrically isolated from one another, but still communicate. The EL817 series of optoisolators offer various technology solutions in a single package, such as transistor, photovoltaic output, etc. The EL817 series of optoisolators are used in a wide variety of applications where high-voltage isolation must be maintained between two circuits while still allowing both to communicate. The EL817 can be used in various types of signal transmission, from DC voltage signals, to pulse signals, to data signals.

The EL817 series optoisolator provides for high-voltage isolation between two circuits. This isolation is accomplished through an internal light-emitting diode (LED) and an external photo-sensitive device, usually a phototransistor. When current flows through the LED, it produces light that is then detected by the phototransistor, thereby providing isolation between the two circuits.

A major benefit of a transistor-based optoisolator is the ability to use the transistor to amplify the signal coming from the input circuit. This allows the signal to be read accurately, without risking interference from other circuits. The EL817 optoisolator also has a low-power detection threshold and is designed to operate with a wide range of voltages, from 5V to 150V.

The photovoltaic output type of the EL817 series offers the same advantages as the transistor-based optoisolator. This type of optoisolator also features the same isolation and wide voltage-range capabilities as the transistor-based optoisolator.
