Optoisolators are a type of electronic or electro-mechanical component mainly used to provide electrical isolation between two parts of a circuit. Among these components, there are a variety of devices based on the transistor and photovoltaic output, including the EL817(S)(TB) type. The EL817(S)(TB) optoisolator is a type of non-dissipative optical output device in the 8-pin dual inline package (DIP) format. This device is able to provide optic isolation of up to 1500 volts Transient peak isolation Voltage (Vpk) at a maximum supply voltage of 10.58V DC (Max.). Its dimensions are 18.9 x 6.35 x 4.2 mm. The EL817(S)(TB) features a 1000:1 current transfer ration (CTR), low forward voltage input of 1.7 V typical and a low 0.2µA leakage current at 10V. When used in the recommended operating conditions, the isolation voltage is between 500 V RMS minimum and 1000 V RMS maximum. The device offers a 85 dB minimum common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) at 60 Hz and a propagation delay of 2µs typical. The EL817(S)(TB) optoisolator has an operating temperature range between –40°C and +85°C. It is built with a photovoltaic transistor output, where the base on the transistor output is connected to the internal LED. The LED, which acts as the input, is driven by the photodetector of the sensor and is isolated from the other inputs and outputs of the device. In its working principle, the EL817(S)(TB) optoisolator operates by converting the input signals from the photodiode into electrical signals in the collector of the transistor output. The output current is dependent on the input current applied to the photodetector. The current transfer ratio property enables the device to react to small changes on the input side and output bigger changes on the other side.The EL817(S)(TB) optoisolator can be used in various applications and circuit designs.
