Optoisolators – Logic Output make use of an infra red light-emitting diode and a phototransistor in an optically isolated package in order to separate the input from the output. As such, logic output opto-isolators are widely used in electrical circuits where two input wires being connected create an electrical short circuit, and thus require isolation of the input from the output.
The ELW2601 is among the most popular logic output opto-isolators, featuring an isolated 6-pin SOT-23 package. It employs a single infra-red light emitting diode (LED) as its primary input, and is internally connected to a phototransistor, which is the output driver. With an input current of 1.5mA as well as a forward voltage of 1.9V, the ELW2601 is able to provide a collector current of 50mA at an output voltage of 32V Vcc.
The working principle of the ELW2601 lies in its optical isolation design. When the LED is in its quiescent state, it consumes very little current.
