Introduction to Common Mode Chokes
Common mode chokes, or EMI filters, are passive electronic components which are used to suppress and control common mode noise (EMI) on signal and power lines. Common mode noise is caused by the imbalance in power and signal between the grounded portion of a circuit and the current conductor. This imbalance creates a current loop which carries noise and interference from one component to another, often resulting in disruptions to communications, radiation of undesirable EMI, or other system failure. By suppressing common mode noise, common mode chokes improve system performance and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

EMI2121MTTAG Application Field and Working Principle
The EMI2121MTTAG is a common mode choke manufactured by Murata Electronics. It is designed to provide both signal and power line filtering for automotive applications. It has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C and is able to achieve power line noise suppression of 10dB to 12dB.The EMI2121MTTAG common mode choke is specifically designed for in-vehicle power line and Ethernet communication noise suppression. It is a low impedance passive component which features a toroidal core and two winding section. The connection points of the winding sections are separated to create a single-layer construction which enables a higher mechanical strength.The choke can suppress noise which is in the frequency range of 1kHz to 1GHz and does so by generating an Inductive Differential Mode (IDM) current. This current is generated by the two windings and creates an opposing E-field which cancels out the noise. The two windings are also designed to reduce any common-mode noise that is generated.In addition to the IDM current, the choke also features an open circuit shunt that is used to minimize common-mode noise and to divert any exceedance of current away from the device. The shunt will reduce any noise that is in the frequency range of 1kHz to 1GHz.In summary, the EMI2121MTTAG is a common mode choke specifically designed for automotive applications.
