Backplane Connectors – ARINC Inserts

ARINC Inserts, or ARINC-420 backplane connectors, are primarily used to interconnect avionics systems and related components within an aircraft or other aerospace platforms. ARINC stands for “Airlines Radio Incorporated”, and the ARINC Specification 420 standard was developed for use in airborne applications.These connectors are ideal for high-density applications, as they provide three or more mating contacts in a single interface. This enables designers to reduce the volume, weight, and cost of their avionics system. ARINC inserts are rugged enough to survive vibrations that would damage ordinary electrical connectors.

The ubiquitous EN4165A20-222NA ARINC insert is a good example of the wide variety of sizes and features that can be found in this type of connector. It offers a maximum of 7 contacts in a four-row configuration with a 15-pole pitch. This connector is available with either solder or crimp contacts and is typically used for applications running at high temperatures up to 200°C. It is also highly resistant to shock, vibration and other harsh environmental conditions.

The EN4165A20-222NA ARINC insert operates on the principle of elastic snap action.
