As the name suggests, Embedded FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) is a type of electronic circuit used in embedded systems. This type of circuit is an integrated circuit that can be quickly and easily changed or reconfigured, depending on the application or the specific purpose of the design. Embedded FPGAs are designed to offer an alternative to dedicated application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), which require a large upfront cost and lengthy development cycles.
An Embedded FPGA is typically a family of ICs (Integrated Circuit), which includes software for programming and reprogramming the FPGA. This type of IC chip offers the flexibility to upgrade a project’s functionality with a minimal investment. FPGAs typically deploy very fast and can become customized in real-time by software. In addition to having the ability to change or modify the logic circuit design, Embedded FPGAs also offer high-performance, low power, and small form factor options, making them an ideal choice for a wide array of applications.
A typical example of an embedded FPGA is the EP4CE10F17C8N. This particular FPGA is a low-power, high-performance device manufactured by Altera. It is a 4-cavity FPGA designed with Embedded HardCopy®as well as low-power and high-performance technology. It is mainly used for embedded applications, such as automotive, medical and industrial applications. It is also used to develop applications related to cryptography, mobility, embedded vision and embedded video.
The EP4CE10F17C8N has four identical die on a single die, which is an excellent option for cost-reduction and miniaturization. It has a total embedded memory and logic of 220,000 logic elements (LEs) and 8 x20bit of hardened RAMblocks - giving 8LUTs per LE. It also features two PowerPC, 600MHz blocks in addition to the 3,2V supply voltage. It also contains a set of i/o that includes 105 user I/O, 12 analog I/O, sixteen 19-bit PLLs, and 12 high-speed transceivers.
The EP4CE10F17C8N also comes with several other features, including four independent clock regions (ICR); a dedicated, 1/24 fractional PLL; Dual Power-Wide Bus (PWB) interrupt controller; and an embedded high-speed dual-link transceivers. The dedicated 1/24 fractional PLL helps to reduce sensitivity to input frequency variations while allowing fine-tuning of the output frequency. The dual Power-Wide Bus (PWB) interrupt controller accelerates system performance by providing interrupt services over separate local, global and shared levels. The embedded dual-link transceivers offer high-speed operation, as well as both high-speed and low-speed transceiving modes.
The Altera EP4CE10F17C8N also includes several other features and capabilities, such as asynchronous clock generation, self-test and a built-in AES encryption engine. The asynchronous clock generator feature is capable of generating multiple clock frequencies and self-timed phase delays. This allows the device to operate in multiple clock domains simultaneously. The built-in AES encryption engine helps to provide a high level of data security. Additionally, it offers a JTAG port and an I2C port, which make it easy to connect to other devices.
The Altera EP4CE10F17C8N is an incredibly advanced and versatile device that offers a wide range of features and capabilities. As such, it can be used in a variety of applications and for a variety of purposes. It is suitable for use in high-end embedded designs, as well as for cost-reduction and miniaturization. It’s fast speeds, low power operation, small form factor, and rich feature set make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. In addition, its flexible design and configurability make it a perfect solution for almost any embedded design.
