A Schottky diode is a type of rectifier diode with a lower forward voltage drop and faster switching action than a conventional rectifier diode. Schottky diodes are commonly used in high-frequency power supplies, voltage regulators and other applications that require a fast switching operation. While regular rectifier diodes are characterized by their medium to high forward voltage drop, Schottky diodes typically have a forward voltage drop of about 0.2 to 0.5 volts - significantly less than their regular counterparts. This makes them well-suited for applications where a faster response time is required.In a Schottky diode, the junction between the anode (positive terminal) and cathode (negative terminal) is formed by the so-called "Schottky Barrier". This barrier is formed by metallic material, rather than the semiconductor material common in regular rectifier diodes. Because of this, current starts to flow as soon as the voltage across the diode reaches the forward voltage drop, instead of having to exceed the breakdown voltage of the junction. This makes Schottky diodes exceptionally fast switching, without sacrificing efficiency. Schottky diodes are available in a range of configurations, from small surface mount devices to large, high current bridge rectifiers. The maximum current and voltage ratings of a particular Schottky diode will depend on the size and configuration of the device, as well as the type of material used for the Schottky barrier. Smaller packages, such as SOD-323, usually have lower ratings, while larger packages such as TO-220, offer higher ratings.The most common application for Schottky diodes is in high-frequency power supplies. Because of their low forward voltage drop, they can reduce power loss in circuits operating at high frequencies. They can also be used as rectifier diodes in power supplies, and their fast switching action makes them well suited for fast, high-frequency switching applications.
