A diode is a two terminal device used to conduct current in only one direction and it serves as an electrical one-way valve. In the rectification process, diodes play a vital role in converting alternating current to a more powerful direct current. One common example of a rectifier diode is the EU02. In this article, we will delve into the application field and inner workings of the EU02.

The EU02 is an ideal diode rectifier designed for high power applications consisting of printing, rectification, motors, and power supply. It is a fast recovery diode device operating up to a maximum frequency of 1000 kHz and offering a high surge current capability at 1 microsecond up to 5 A. With a thermal resistance junction-to-case of 1.5℃/W, it is suitable for high-temperature operations.

The physical size of the EU02 for mounting onto a PCB is 3.2*2.7*1.4mm. It has an rated Repetitive Reverse Voltage of 200V and is capable of withstanding a peak reverse voltage up to 400V. The maximum reverse current is 40mA at steady-state. As for its forward voltage, it has a maximum of 0.8V.

Regarding the EU02 working principle, the device is composed of a cathode, anode and depletion layer between the two. During operation, the depletion layer acts as an insulator, restricting current flow in one direction. When positive voltage is applied to the anode terminal, the depletion layer begins to break down and current flows in the anode’s direction.

When a negative potential is applied to the cathode terminal, holes and electrons in the external circuit are drawn towards the anode and cathode respectively. This creates an electric field within the depletion layer and the junction being reverse-biased, no current flows. In other words, no current is allowed to flow in the opposite direction. This is why a diode produces direct current.

The EU02 also has a soft reverse recovery, meaning it produces a low reverse current for a short amount of time during power cut or polarity reversal operations. This rapid reverse recovery time possibility is proportional to the higher surge currents and maximum frequency ratings.

EU02 is a suitable component for numerous power handling applications such as frequency converters and solar inverters. With its high pulse capability, reverse voltage and soft recovery characteristics, it suitable for efficient power management systems.

In conclusion, the EU02 diode rectifier is designed for applications requiring free-wheeling protection, as it can rectify alternating current to direct current and block the reverse current.
