The switching transistor is responsible for controlling the energy flow to the output, while the inductor smoothes the current. The Schottky diode protects the inductor from back EMF (electromotive force) in case the switching transistor turns off prematurely. The FAN4603MM18X contains an internal oscillator which creates periodic pulses which switch the transistor. These pulsesgenerate an alternating current in the inductor which is then rectified with the help of the Schottky diode. The rectified current is produced at the output and it is regulated in order to maintain the desired voltage level. The output voltage is determined by the external feedback resistors R1 and R2, which must be configured accordingly.
