The FAN4858TZ is a high-efficiency, low-cost, DC-DC buck switching regulator from Fairchild Semiconductor. It is intended for applications where high efficiency and cost are both primary considerations. It is capable of delivering up to 6A output current, and features a low 25 mV voltage drop across the switch when operating at the maximum load current. Additionally, the integrated soft-start circuitry minimizes the inrush current which helps to provide a more efficient and smoother power delivery to the system.

The FAN4858TZ operates with a wide range of input voltages, from 4.5V to 28V, and is capable of regulating the output voltage to within 0.5% accuracy over temperatures ranging from -40°C to +125°C. It is capable of operating in forced continuous mode, and also has the option of shutdown mode to reduce power consumption when the device is not in use. In the off state, the diode conducts current from the load back to the input voltage.

To control the MOSFET and determine the power efficiency, a voltage control loop is used. This loop provides feedback to switch between the two states according to the input voltage and output current. This feedback loop is referred to as the “On/Off” loop. The duty cycle of the switch is adjusted according to the amount of desired output current, and the frequency is regulated to maintain the required output voltage. The switching frequency is determined by the output voltage and output current demands.
