The FAN5033MPX is a highly-integrated system cost-optimized dc-to-dc converter used to optimize power distribution in modern computing and networking systems. It features a low operating current that enables a system solution with a low overall bill-of-materials (BOM). The FAN5033MPX has been designed to support 28V mid-range power rails and can deliver up to 253 mA of output current. Additionally, the FAN5033MPX is also capable of supporting a wide range of output voltages from 0.6V to 5.3V.

Working Principle:
The FAN5033MPX employs a voltage-mode digital control technique and advanced process technology to enable ultra-low operating current while maintaining high efficiency. The controller works by comparing the output voltage to an internally generated reference voltage. The control logic then adjusts the internal power switches based on the voltage difference. The unique combination of advanced control algorithms, high-accuracy voltage references, and intelligent power management, life cycle optimizations, and thermal control capabilities enables the FAN5033MPX to deliver superior efficiency and low power dissipation.
The device also features an integrated circuit breaker, which protects the system from over-current and short-circuit faults. The circuit breaker monitors the output current and can be enabled/disabled using a pin. The FAN5033MPX also features built-in thermal protection which monitors the internal power switch temperature. If the temperature exceeds the designed threshold, the converter will shutdown to protect itself from overheating.
The FAN5033MPX supports five different operating modes: forced PWM mode,PSR (power-saving-restricted) mode, normal mode, power-save mode, and low ripple mode. In forced PWM mode, the internal oscillator and error amplifier are disabled to reduce power consumption. In PSR mode, the FAN5033MPX automatically adjusts the pulse width in order to maintain a constant output voltage. In normal mode, the internal oscillator and error amplifier are enabled and the FAN5033MPX is able to track input voltages in real-time with quick load transient response. In power-save mode, the frequency of the internal oscillator is reduced to lower the output ripple voltage and reduce power consumption. Finally, in low ripple mode, the FAN5033MPX reduces the output ripple to less than 5 mVp-p at the full load condition.
The FAN5033MPX also provides additional protection features such as over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, and over-current protection. Additionally, the converter can be synchronized to an external clock or it can operate in free-run mode. The FAN5033MPX also features a low noise PWM switching frequency of up to 2.2 MHz and low quiescent current of only 11uA.
