The FAN53600AUC28X is a member of the FAN53600 Series Ultra-Low Standby Quasi-Resonant (QR) DC-DC switching regulator controllers from Fairchild Semiconductor. This high-performance and integration device features embedded protections, such as output ovoltage (OVP), overload protection, and overtemperature protection. The embedded N-Channel MOSFET and direct-phase Oscillator with the low RDSON voltage-balanced process design make it an ideal solution for cost sensitive application such as high-volume computing and multimedia applications.
The FAN53600AUC28X is designed to reduce system standby power by as much as 70%, eliminates the need for a full-featured controller IC, and provides a complete power-management solution in a 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package. The FAN53600AUC28X is a voltage regulator tailored for medium power applications in a wide range of digital system applications. It is a step-down DC to DC switching regualtor that works on the principle of regulating the output voltage of the power supply at a given level.
The FAN53600AUC28X collection controllers offer an adjustable output voltage from 0.8V to 5.5V with fixed 3A or 5A output. The device also features Frequency/Current modes for improved noise, efficiency and line/load transient response. It also provides various system protection functions such as OVP, UVP, OT, FSD and cycle-by-cycle current limit. The device also offers a wider range of system control functions such as Soft-start, Sleep/Hibernate/Standy, Power-good and Overload protection.
The main application fields for the FAN53600AUC28X cover a wide range of digital products, such as notebooks, desktop PCs, tablets and Smartphones, as well as other low to medium power applications requiring high efficiency. In order to provide a voltage regulator for medium power applications, the FAN53600AUC28X works as follows.
- The device is composed of a control block and an output stage both connected to ground. The control block consists of a voltage regulator, an error amplifier, a reference, a comparator, and a power switch.
- The internal error amplifier monitors the output voltage and then compares it to two voltages. One voltage is the reference voltage while the other is the output voltage.
- The output of the error amplifier is then fed to the comparator which signals either an “on” or “off” state. The control block then signals the power switch accordingly.
- The output stage is formed by a N-Channel MOSFET switch. In its “on” state the switch connects the inductor to the output capacitor. This stores charge in the electrostatic field around the capacitor resulting in the output voltage being controlled.
- The output voltage is regulated by controlling the “on” and “off” time of the power switch. As the output droops, the control block increases the “on” time, thus controlling the output voltage.
