RF antennas are widely used in wireless communication, serving as a bridge connecting the wireless world and the interface of equipment. The antenna is much like a portal for allowing electromagnetic signals to travel between transmitters and receivers, so high performance antennas are an important aspect of communication systems.
Calculations prove that the gain of a half wave dipole is 2.15dB. Antennas with a greater antenna gain are able to transmit energy more efficiently and provide an improved signal reception. To meet the need for higher antenna gain in communication systems, antenna array technology has been developed to simultaneously increase the electrical gain of an antenna while reducing the number of antennas needed.The FG4400 is a high-gain antenna array developed by Fostcom with beam steering capabilities, enabling the ability to focus radio signals in a desired direction, providing better performance compared to a single antenna. It not only has a high antenna gain of up to 16.3 dB and a wide 3 dB antenna beamwidth, but also has a low noise figure and good port to port isolation levels to minimize intermodulation distortion.
To build the FG4400 antenna array, DBS002L4 and J0631G30 antenna elements are used. The FG4400 antenna array consists of four antennas, and one of the DBS002L4 antenna elements forms the central antenna, which is connected to the RF signal source. The remaining three antenna elements use J0631G30 antenna elements to form an equilateral triangular array, and are used to form a triplet array, which is connected to the central antenna.
The working principle of the FG4400 antenna array is based on phased array technology. It operates by delaying the RF signal by different amounts on each antenna element and then combining the signals appropriately to create a desired beam pattern. This can be done by using a combination of variable phase shifters and combiners to direct the phase of the signals in each antenna element such that they all add together in the desired direction, while subtracting from signals traveling in the undesired direction. This allows the radiation pattern to be shaped to provide the most gain in the direction of interest.
The FG4400 is ideal for applications requiring high antenna gain and a wide 3 dB beamwidth such as base stations, Wi-Fi networks, radar systems, and communication satellites. It can also be used for short-range transmission of data over a multipoint network, as the antenna array can be used to generate antennas with a higher gain and narrower beamwidth to provide greater coverage and improved signal reception.
