Thyristors are a type of semiconductor device used to control current. A TRIAC is the one of the most common types of Thyristors. The FKN08PN60 is a silicon bidirectional thyristor widely used in power electronic switching applications. It is a high power module with a maximum average current rating of up to 8 amps.

Applications

The FKN08PN60 can be used in various power electronic switching applications such as motor control, variable-speed drives, adjustable speed drives, and motor soft starts. It is used in applications that require moderate current driving capability. It is also used in AC power management systems, AC output switches in power supplies, AC dimmers, and load speed control circuits.

Working Principle

The FKN08PN60 is a silicon bidirectional thyristor with two main operating modes – Forward Voltage Blocking/Off and Reverse Voltage Blocking/Off. In the forward blocking state, the thyristor has a characteristic that acts as a switch and operates in the blocking mode. When a voltage (positive or negative) is applied across it, the device will remain open when the voltage is below a specific “holding” level. When the voltage level rises to a certain threshold level, the device will be turned on and will remain on until the voltage across it drops below a certain level. This state of operation is referred to as triggering.

In the reverse blocking mode, the FKN08PN60 operates as a simple switch and limits the current that can flow through its terminals. The current limit is set by the applied voltage across the device. When the voltage is increased beyond the device’s threshold voltage, the device will turn on, allowing the current to flow until the voltage is reduced below the threshold level.

The FKN08PN60 is designed for use as an AC switch and its operating characteristics make it an ideal device for power switching applications. It is an easy to use, economical, and reliable solution that provides reliable switching when used with the appropriate power control circuits.
