Optoisolators - Triac, SCR Output
FOD420 is an opto-isolator that enables the control of mid-range 110-240V AC power with a 5-12V DC logic signal. It utilizes a bidirectional Triac as the output with an SCR attached to the back. It is designed primarily for use in applications which require the isolation of a control signal and the simultaneous breaking of an AC power line.
The FOD420 Circuit is comprised of a high-voltage optocoupler, a low-side Triac, and a backside SCR. These components are interconnected in a way that the optocoupler drives the gate of the triac, and the BC or collector of the optocoupler drives the gate of the SCR. The opto-isolator provides a maximum isolation voltage of 5,500Vrms.
The FOD420 has a couple advantages when compared to other opto-isolators. For one, it allows for bidirectional control – meaning it can work for both positive and negative DC logic with a simple modifications. Another advantage is that it is able to switch high voltages with minimal current consumption of only 4mA. It also has a wide operating temperature range of -40 to + 90C, making it suitable for use in a wide variety of applications.
When it comes to the FOD420’s working principle, it is fairly simple. The circuit works by sending a DC signal between the logic side and the AC side of the opto-isolator. Upon receiving the signal, the opto-isolator works by isolating the two circuits and providing a high-voltage electrical field between the Triac gate and the SCR base. This high-voltage field causes the Triac to turn on and off, thus allowing for control of the AC line.
The FOD420 is an opto-isolator that is widely used in the fields of motor control, industrial automation, lighting control, and alternative energy. It allows for the control of mid-range AC power with a DC logic signal, whilst also providing up to 5,500V of isolation. It is ideal for applications which require bidirectional control and the breaking of AC power lines.
