FR104GTA Application Field and Working Principle

Working principle

The FR104GTA Rectifier Diode works by rectifying AC power into DC power. It consists of a single semiconductor junction – typically composed of silicon or germanium – with a negative bias on the Anode side and a positive bias to the Cathode side. As the positive bias towards the Cathode side is greater than the negative bias on the Anode side, the device always prefers to be in an ‘off’ state when no power is present. During ‘on’ state, the reverse current is allowed to flow across the diode, while when ‘off’ the diode provides a complete break (off the grid) from AC power.

When current is applied to the FR104GTA Rectifier Diode, a forward conduction current is allowed to flow from the Anode to the Cathode side, provided that the voltage applied is greater than the breakdown voltage of the junction. This flow of current is also claimed to be “unidirectional”, since the reverse current is blocked and the breakdown voltage is rarely reached. During ‘on’ state, the voltage drop across the diode is kept nearly constant, regardless of the amount of current passing through the device.
