The FR1B-13-F is a single rectifier diode ideal for a range of general purpose applications. This classic low-cost diode can be used in a variety of devices including power supplies, high-voltage DC power converters, circuit protection, TV sets and radios. The FR1B-13-F diode features a plastic encapsulation, a breakdown voltage of 12V and an average forward current of up to 1.0A.
Most rectifier diodes, such as the FR1B-13-F, are formed from a semiconductor material such as silicon rather than organic or gaseous material. As the name suggests, a rectifier diode acts like a one-way valve for current flow. This action allows the diode to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The characteristic that defines a rectifier diode is its unique ability to allow current to flow in one direction but block it in the other. This effect is created in a diode by introducing into it a thin layer of a light-sensitive material called a “p-n-junction”.
Rectification of electrical energy is an important process in the conversion of AC to DC. In AC power systems, voltage and current constantly change polarity, whereas in DC systems they remain in the same direction. The FR1B-13-F is able to convert the AC signal to a DC signal with minimal changes in output voltage and current. The device works by utilizing the reverse voltage blocking property of the p-n-junction.
When forward biased, the diode conducts current in its forward direction, allowing energy to flow in one direction on the outgoing side and allowing a gradual increase in voltage. When the reverse voltage applied to the diode is greater than its blocking voltage, the flow of current is blocked, achieving the desired rectification.
The FR1B-13-F provides an economical solution that enables the engineering of reliable, highly efficient power supplies, converters and motors. Due to its capability to handle high-currents and voltages, the diode is widely used in automotive, military and industrial applications. Furthermore, its rugged construction makes the FR1B-13-F particularly well suited for harsh environmental conditions.
