FR802 is a technical term used to refer to a single, stand-alone rectifier diode. It is widely used in various electronic circuits and applications, commonly as a reliable energy source and power control. The “FR” in the term denotes the “fast switching” capability of the device, while the numerical value following the “FR” stands for the current rating (in amperes) over which the device can reliably work. It is a common sight in micromachines, computers, automobiles, and every other imaginable device requiring electrically efficient and reliable power.

Typically, a FR802 diode holds two terminals for connection purposes, namely the anode and the cathode. These two terminals are connected directly or by a connector or PCB to the circuit of the device which the rectifier is intended to power or control. The anode denotes the positive side of the diode, and is connected to the circuit’s “node” or power source. The cathode, labelled with a “–” sign, is connected to the circuit’s ground or “zero” voltage. In essence, a FR802 diode behaves like an electronic one-way street, allowing current to pass only through it in one direction which is from the anode to the cathode.

The main purpose of a single rectifier diode, such as the FR802, is to rectify alternating current into direct current – thus the name “rectifier”. Rectifiers are mainly used for power control, as well as in power supplies, home heating, and other equipment driven by electrically powered motors or generators. FR802 diodes are also popularly used to block and protect sensitive circuits from electrical damage due to exposure in reverse current.

The working principle of the FR802 rectifier diode is the same as most single rectifier diodes. The voltage passing through the anode and the cathode is measured for most rectifier diodes by monitoring the voltage drop at their terminals, commonly referred to as their forward voltage. When the anode voltage is greater than the cathode voltage, current flow through the diode is permitted; however, if the cathode voltage is greater than the anode voltage, current flow through the diode is blocked.

In addition, the FR802 rectifier diode also functions as a voltage regulator, as it allows a certain voltage level to pass through it depending on its rating. For example, an FR802 with a current rating of 400mA can safely transmit 200mV of voltage at maximum load. The diode’s peak inverse voltage (PIV) rating is also important to consider, as this specifies the maximum amount of reverse voltage that can safely pass through the diode. A diode with a PIV of 800V can safely pass 400V of reverse voltage at maximum load without fail.
