FSPP936Y Application Field and Working PrincipleFSPP936Y is a poly-phase, capacitive-input DC-DC converter developed by Fairchild. It is typically used in applications where energy efficiency is a priority concern. This converter is a hybrid of full-bridge and capacitor-input buck topologies, providing high power factor and efficiency suitable for low-power voltage bus architectures. Its features make it suitable for use in multiple computing and industrial applications such as datacenters, servers, distributed line factor power systems (DLFPS), renewable energy systems, industrial motor drives, traction systems, and medical imaging equipment.In the FSPP936Y, conversion from input AC power to a regulated DC output is primarily achieved by a single stage topology consisting of an input power factor correction (PFC), pulse width modulation (PWM) booster inductor, and an isolated DC-DC converter. The PFC stage ensures low-harmonic distortion input current and harmonically regulated output voltage. PWM gating is then applied to the booster inductor, allowing it to step-down the input voltage and further increase efficiency. Finally, the isolated DC-DC converter enables conversion from the AC side to the DC side.The PFC stage of the FSPP936Y consists of a bridge transformer, six diodes, two pairs of high-voltage IGBTs and two pairs of low-voltage switches. A single-phase sinusoidal waveform is used to calculate the peak of the AC side voltage, allowing the PFC stage to generate a soft sinusoidal output for high power factor. To further reduce harmonic distortion, usually a three-phase sinusoidal waveform is used.The PWM booster inductor is a high efficiency switch mode power supply (SMPS) controlled by an internal timer. Its design allows it to step down the average value of the DC voltage rail to a much lower voltage while maintaining the same average voltage for the input voltage. A buck topology is then used in the final stage of the FSPP936Y, where the high-voltage DC voltage is converted into a low-voltage isolated DC voltage capable of powering the load.In addition, the FSPP936Y features improved diagnostics such as overvoltage protection, thermal monitoring, programmable pre-bias output, and a power on/off delay.
