FX-20 is a kind of automation product manufactured by AutomationDirect. It is categorized as a general-purpose, programmable logic controller (PLC). As a central processing element, FX-20 consists of a CPU, memory device, and input/output (I/O) modules. Among the I/O modules are specialized pulse I/O modules, isolated I/O modules, and point-to-point I/O modules. It is mainly used for process control, test and measurement, and production control.

The memory device consists of two parts: RAM, for storing the data and program, and EEPROM, for preserving the program and parameters.

Next, FX-20 has 4 slots for I/O modules with 8 I/O points in each slot. These I/O modules provide input channels and output channels depending on the type, varying from 4 to 32 points. The input modules are responsible for receiving data from another module or external device; while the output modules convert the data into appropriate signals and send it out. The isolated modules, doing separately control the input and output, provide additional protection between circuits when connected to the PLC.

On top of that, the communication system DirectNet, mainly based on RS-485, is made up of 4 components, such as the machine modules, line modules, trigger modules, and reference modules. All the communication modules are pre-set by the system, making it convenient to communicate between multiple controllers. In addition, the FX-20 controller provides two kinds of communication port which compatible with the DirectNet.
