Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are becoming increasingly widespread in the modern world as their versatility and reliability become appreciated. This versatile device is widely used in many power system applications thanks to its high protection level against lightning over-voltages, surge over-voltages, radio and atmospheric noise and switching transients. One of the popular varieties of GDTs is the G5000AS. This article looks at the G5000AS application field and its working principle.
The G5000AS is a high-performance movable metal oxide varistor GDT commonly used protect the power system from exceptional voltage surge generated by lightning or other phenomenon. Furthermore, the device is capable of stopping AC transients with energy up to 20kV and TD2 transients with up to 10kV.
The G5000AS also offer a host of other features and benefits including a wide range of operating temperatures, good electromechanical properties and high-quality capacitors. The GDT also features a built-in protective device against sparkover, giving users an additional safeguard against lightning surge and short-circuit current.
The G5000AS works by utilizing a metal oxide layered film on the two ends of the device. Incoming surge voltage causes an abrupt increase in electron emission which produces a current raising a high voltage between the two electrodes resulting in a very high breakdown or sparkover voltage. This process results in an open circuit between the two electrodes, which acts as the arrester and prevents any further surge to pass through the system.
In conclusion, the G5000AS is one of the most reliable GDTs on the market and offers plenty of features and benefits. Its vibration resistance and low failure rate make it ideal for a wide variety of applications and its ability to stop AC and TD2 transients makes it an excellent choice for telecoms, power grids and other power system applications.
