Diodes - Bridge Rectifiers

The GBPC1005/1 is a high-end bridge rectifier featuring high volumetric efficiency. It is manufactured in a plastic package and can be used in both non-polarised and polarised printed circuit constructions. It is made with four rectifier diodes connected in a bridge configuration. It exhibits forward-conducting voltage up to 100 V, forward current rating up to 1 A and reverse-blocking voltage of 1000 V.

Application Field

The GBPC1005/1 is commonly used in low power electronics such as power supplies, lighting, industrial equipment, appliances, and automotive industries. It is used to convert AC line input into DC current and can used in offline switch-mode power supplies, global power adapters and general-purpose power supplies.

Working Principle

The working principle of a bridge rectifier is fairly simple. It relies on four rectifier diodes arranged in a “bridge” configuration. The diagram below shows the arrangement of the four diodes. Two of the diodes are forward-facing, while the other two are reverse-facing. The output of the bridge rectifier is taken off at the junction between the two forward-facing diodes, which is known as the anode.

When the input is connected to the diodes, alternating current (AC) flows through the circuit. The current then flows through two opposing paths - one that has both forward-facing diodes conducting in the same direction, and one that has the reverse-facing diodes conducting in the opposite direction. It is this alternating current that is converted into direct current (DC). The rectified output is then available from the anode.
