The working principle of a Bridge Rectifier is relatively simple. A bridge rectifier is an electrical circuit that consists of four diodes connected in such a way that the output voltage is a “stepped-up” instead of a “stepped-down” version of the input voltage. As the AC input passes through the diode bridge, it is directed to either the positive (+) or negative (-) outgoing path depending on the half cycle of the AC wave. On the positive (+) side, the upper diodes are forward biased and the lower two diodes are reverse biased. When AC voltage is placed on the left side and ground on the right, current flows from the left to the right through the upper two diodes (D1 and D2) allowing current to pass in the same direction. This process causes a DC voltage to be produced on the right. On the negative (-) path, the upper two diodes are reverse biased and the lower two (D3 and D4) are forward biased, allowing current to pass in the same direction from the right to the left. This process causes a DC voltage to be produced on the left.
