What is GDN?

GDN stands for ground-dome network, which is a type of RF signal antennas commonly used in cell phone towers. This antenna type has a number of advantages and is abundantly used in the communications industry. Its application covers a wide variety of communication systems, such as base stations, satellite broadcasting, cellular communication, and more.

Why Choose GDN?

GDN antennas are preferred over other antenna types because of its superior performance in directional radiation. This is due to the physical form of the antenna, which has an outward-curved roof that acts as a dimple or concave shape to better focus radiation in the direction of the main lobe. Additionally, GDN antennas are compact and lightweight, making them easier to assemble and install. This makes them well-suited for installations in difficult or confined spaces.

GDN Application Field and Working Principle

GDNs are used in a number of communication systems, such as cellular base stations, satellite communications, long-distance point-to-point links, and radio broadcasting. The antenna is mounted on a single ground plane, which multiple top plates are rigidly attached. These top plates are electrically interconnected, forming a concentric array of elements.

When the antenna is installed and in operational mode, a radio frequency signal is applied to the first top plate. The signal is then radiated into the environment and when bouncing back off a reflective surface, it is transmitted to the opposite top plate. This type of connection increases the antenna’s gain, meaning the signal becomes stronger. If the environment has no reflective surface, the signal will not bounce back, resulting in little or no gain.

Directionality is achieved by forming a multi-layer roof structure, with each layer radiating at specific angles. The angle of the first top plates determines the main lobe of the directed radiation and its position. The same goal is achieved through a secondary ground plane placed at a 45-degree angle that is shifted off-center from the original antenna.

Conclusion

The GDN antenna is a powerful and reliable RF signal antenna, and it is capable of producing a reliable signal with high gain and directionality. Its application covers a wide variety of communication systems, such as base stations, satellite broadcasting, and cellular communication, and more. GDN antennas are preferred over other antenna types due to their superior directional radiation and compact design.
