Application

Working Principle

The GI858-E3/54 is a four layer diode. When the diode is forward biased, the positive terminal of the applied external power source is connected to the anode of the diode while the negative terminal is connected to the cathode. The applied external voltage makes the junction P-N of the diode to become forward biased and the current starts flowing through the diode in one single direction. The rectifier diode then passes the current in only one direction and blocks it from passing in the opposite direction.

In a bridge rectifier application, four diodes are used in combination to form a bridge, as shown in the figure below. All the four diodes are arranged in two pairs in a manner so that when the incoming AC voltage is applied to them, the two diodes that are in series gets forward biased and conducts the current over them in one direction. On the other hand, the other two diodes that are connected in parallel become reverse biased and do not pass the electric current through them. Thus, only one direction current is able to pass through the output.
